LINC Instructor (Casual/On Call)

YW Calgary is looking for a LINC Substitute Instructor to teach CLB levels 1 – 4 to newcomers to Canada when the classroom instructor is absent. The LINC Substitute Instructor should be able to teach online and in-person and be available in the morning and/or evening.

This is a substituting position working variable hours Monday-Friday - the exact schedule is to be determined based on program needs.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Create and instruct engaging and meaningful module plans and daily lessons following the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
  • Assess learner progress and performance using Portfolio Based Language Instruction principles and guidelines.
  • Conduct ongoing needs assessments with learners, assist learners with goal setting and conduct one one-on-one interviews to provide feedback on learner progress.
  • Integrate digital resources and use online delivery tools like Zoom and Google Classroom to instruct and support student learning.
  • Document student progress, prepare progress reports, and conduct regular feedback meetings with learners.
  • Maintain accurate records to track attendance, portfolio artefacts and other documentation as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other LINC team members to plan, develop and share resources.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings, PD sessions and other activities as required.
  • Provide input to LINC Program Administration Team on student issues, policies, resources and/or other issues that affect programming.
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace environment. 
  • Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles to your role, how you work and how you engage with others, as aligned with YW Calgary’s values and Practice Framework.
  • Share individual accountability to create and maintain inclusive and safe spaces and practices (physically and psychologically) that are open, transparent, and encourage accountability, advocacy, and mentorship.   
  • Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment to YW’s culture.
  • Inform team members and leaders to stop any unsafe work practices immediately to create awareness and injury/illness prevention.
  • Report any hazards or incidents immediately to your leader in accordance with YW Calgary’s incident reporting requirements to help ensure pro-active risk mitigation and management in compliance with legislative requirements (Occupational Health & Safety, Workers’ Compensation Board, etc.)
  • Use all safety materials, equipment, devices and tools required to safely perform work in alignment with YW’s role and task requirements.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of the National Standard for Psychological Health & Safety and integrate into all work practices and interactions with colleagues.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
  • Degree in Teaching English as a Second/Additional Language, Education, Linguistics or other related field, specific courses or professional development related to teaching EAL and EAL methodology,
  • Previous experience teaching LINC classes
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks and experience implementing Portfolio Based Language Assessment
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Proven ability to support adult learners to new technology as a learning resource
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about working with newcomers and committed to helping them achieve their personal goals
